Sex + Marriage: Being 16 in the US and elsewhere.

We’ll watch the Jenelle episode of MTV’s “16 and Pregnant,” and discuss the episode in the context of this piece in Slate about whether the show exploits the teenagers who are featured and whether it contributes to – or discourages – teen pregnancy. What do you think? Comment on this post with your response to that episode. In the context of the Haviland chapter (8) on sex and marriage, what does “teen pregnancy” mean in the United States? Premarital sex? Is it glamorized, or discouraged? Why? (For more clips from the Jenelle episode, check out this post from Jezebel.)

Today’s project is inspired by a quote from anthropologist Annette Weiner in the Haviland chapter: “Sexual liaisons give adolescents the time and occasion to experiment with all the possibilities and problems that adults face in creating relationships with those who are not relatives. Individual wills may clash, and the achievement of one’s desire takes patience, hard work, and determination. The adolescent world of lovemaking has its own dangers and disillusionments. Young people, to the degree they are capable, must learn to be both careful and fearless.”

From the IM/email/text conversations you posted earlier (or from your own experience), choose a single word that describes some aspect of the dating experiences of 16-year-olds in the United States. Recall the “talking” example from class. Interview 16-year-olds about the definition of that word and how it’s significant to the dating process. Post this interview here, categorized as “dating.”
